Opening week of the 2010 regular season saw a few noteworthy occurrences. Here they are:
* Coach Waldon Tucker won his 300th game when
Fayette County defeated Sipsey Valley 28-6 to open the season. Coach Tucker is
after win number 303 which will top the mark set by Glenn Daniel in 1992.
* Coach Dale Jeffreys won his
100th game at Red Bay with a 20-14 win over Sheffield.
* T.R. Miller fell short in their bid to win
number 600 and will try again on Friday against Bayside Academy.
* New teams dotted the football landscape but
none managed to win as Sipsey Valley, Saraland, St. Luke's, Flint Hill
Christian and Decatur Heritage Christian all lost.
* Randolph took to the field for the first time in thirty years.
The Raiders played football from 1974-1979 before discontinuing the sport. They
will participate in class 3A Region Seven.
* Akron is fielding a team this season. They will take the place of St. Bernard in region six.
St. Bernard
decided to forgo their 2010 season when they only had thirteen players. Akron,
which was scheduled to close prior to the season, decided to remain open and wished to play football
but were unable to put a schedule in place until St. Bernard dropped out of
competition. The Rams will play eight games in 2010.
* Tuscaloosa
County and Opelika both snapped a string of fourteen consecutive seasons opening
with a victory. Enterprise takes over the top spot having put together a string
of fourteen in a row with a win over Sidney Lanier in their new stadium.
* Holt has lost sixteen season openers in a row. They were outmanned by Paul Bryant 61-7.
Other with losing streaks include Sulligent (12), J.F. Shields (11), Coffeeville
(10) and B.B. Comer (10).
* Patrician Academy has scored 30 or more points in an amazing 25 consecutive games.
During the streak they are averaging 48 points a game. That is the longest
streak in history for any school. Sweet Water put together a streak of 22 games
from 2007-2008 to top the AHSAA schools.
* Carver Birmingham defeated B.T.
Washington 20-6 to break their 30 game losing streak at their first game in their new stadium.
* The new losing streak belongs to Central Hayneville with 24 consecutive
losses. Others with long losing streaks include J.F. Shields (23), Ashville (21)
and Talladega (18).
* Patrician Academy extended their winning streak to 25 games
with an impressive 50-13 win over Wilcox Academy.
They currently hold the longest streak in Alabama.
* T.R. Miller extended their streak by scoring
in 294 consecutive games in a 34-35 loss to Escambia County.
* Linden won their 23rd straight regular season
game.
* Paul Bryant tied a team record for points
scored in a 61-7 victory over Holt.
* The Indian of Colbert County have been
shutout three consecutive games. The last time that happened was 1952.
Note: The new schools will not be included in team records because of the
obvious reasons.
Teams that set team records.
* Livingston beat Choctaw County 70-0 to set a team record for points scored
and margin of victory.
* Walter Wellborn slammed Gaston 68-16 to set a team mark for points scored in a game.
* The 70 points allowed by Choctaw County was a team record.
* St. Paul's defeated B.C. Rain 51-0 to set a team record for
margin of victory.
* Sardis smashed Brindlee Mountain 58-0 to set a team
record for margin of victory.
* B.C. Rain,
Brindlee Mountain and Choctaw County all set team record for their worst defeat.
* Carver beat Opelika 55-34 and both teams set a mark for most points
scored by both teams.
* Jacksonville lost to John Carroll 56-28 but
set the team record for most points scored by both teams.
