2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodland finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Woodland finished eighth in Class 2A region five with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bobcats lost as many games as in any season since 2000. The defense allowed a team record 399 points last season. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Woodland averaged scoring just 12.2 points a game. The Bobcats also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 39.9 points a game. The Bobcats would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Woodland has gone a combined 45-37. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 2A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Woodland has managed to compile a record of 152-142. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 2A and 175th in the AHSAA. Randy Boyd will not return to the Woodland sideline in 2017. He was the head football coach with the school the past three seasons and compiled a 12-21 record including 2-1 in the playoffs. His last two teams only managed three wins. Jeremy Stanford, a graduate of Clay County High School, played for Danny Horn. He has been an assistant under Horn the past two seasons. This is the first head coaching job for Stanford. The Woodland Bobcats will play in Class 2A region five during the 2017 season. The Bobcats have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-50 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 2A and 58th in the AHSAA. This season, the Bobcats will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five. The defense returns Junior cornerback Jade Burge who registered 90 tackles last season. The Bobcats open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Wadley on Thursday, August 31 at Sewell Field. Last year the Wadley Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 10-1 and in first place in Class 1A region four. The Bulldogs lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Sweet Water by a score of 21-20. Woodland and Wadley have met a total of 80 times on the football field. The Bobcats have a 35-43-2 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2016 with Wadley winning by a score of 55-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
