2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
McGill-Toolen completed the 2016 season with a 13-1 record. The Yellow Jackets cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year McGill-Toolen captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 7A playoffs. They finished region play with a 8-0 record. The Yellow Jackets won three consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 7A State Championship game in 2016 only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Hoover at the Alabama Super Seven 17-7 in Auburn. No team at McGill-Toolen ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The defense was very stingy last season as McGill-Toolen ranked 13th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.6 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Yellow Jackets have gone 26-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, McGill-Toolen has gone a combined 71-17. Their 81.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 7A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, McGill-Toolen has managed to compile a record of 187-114. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 7A and 73rd in the AHSAA. After just three seasons at McGill-Toolen, Caleb Ross moves on to Opelika. He led the Yellow Jackets to their best season in school history with a 13-1 record and a state championship in 2015. The Yellow Jackets promoted defensive coordinator Earnest Hill to the head football coaching job during the off season. In his only stint as a head coach he finished 19-15 in three seasons at Greenville (2011-13). He has also served as an assistant coach at Spanish Fort and Walker. Coach Hill's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 19-15 (55.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Hill's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship. Head coaches come and go. The Jackets just keep winning. The McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets will play in Class 7A region one during the 2017 season. The Yellow Jackets enter the 2017 season riding a 15 game regular season winning streak. They have won 13 straight games on their home turf at Lipscomb Park. While most teams rebuild during the off season, McGill-Toolen has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Yellow Jackets enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region one and could very well be representing the South in the Class 7A Super Seven come December. The Yellow Jackets open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Spanish Fort on Friday, August 25 at The Hill. Last year the Spanish Fort Toros finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in second place in Class 6A region one. The Toros lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 6A playoffs to Opelika by a score of 21-17. McGill-Toolen and Spanish Fort have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 6-4-0 record against the Toros. They last met in 2016 with McGill-Toolen winning by a score of 24-3.
