2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Davidson completed the 2016 season with a 9-2 record. With their 7-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 7A region one, the Warriors earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Davidson's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Auburn by a score of 34-10. The Warriors won as many games as in any season since 2010. It marked the first time since the 2012 season that the Warriors qualified for the playoffs. The Warriors hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Riley saw improvement as they won nine games following a 3-7 record in 2015. Since 2010, Davidson has gone a combined 49-27. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 7A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Davidson has managed to compile a record of 159-124. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 7A and 118th in the AHSAA. The Warriors are led by head coach Fred Riley who is entering his fourteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 103-46 over the past thirteen seasons at Davidson. Under his direction the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Riley. Coach Riley's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-one season stands at 131-97 (57.5%). His 131 wins rank 7th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Riley's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times and won three region championships. The Warriors won nine games for the first time since the 2010 season. It was also the last time they won a playoff game. The Davidson Warriors will play in Class 7A region one during the 2017 season. The Warriors enter the 2017 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak. The Warriors should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The defense returns Senior end Jeff Marks who registered 4 sacks for 11 yards in losses last season. The Warriors open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Daphne on Thursday, August 24 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Last year the Daphne Trojans finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in third place in Class 6A region one. The Trojans lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Opelika by a score of 35-6. Davidson and Daphne have met a total of 20 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 7-13-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2016 with Davidson winning by a score of 35-28. Davidson returns 7A All-State Junior kicker Joseph Montano.
