 2017 Preview

Foley finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Foley finished seventh in Class 7A region one with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Foley took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2009. The Lions lost as many games as in any season since 2004.

Foley was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.8 points a game.

Since 2010, Foley has gone a combined 47-34. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 7A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Foley has managed to compile a record of 147-134. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 7A and 162nd in the AHSAA.

The Lions are led by head coach Tad Niblett who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 9-12 over the past two seasons at Foley. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Niblett.

Coach Niblett's overall record as a head football coach in nine season stands at 45-53 (45.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Niblett's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won one region championship.

A ton of injuries last year cost the Lions in the end. They missed the playoffs for the first time since 2004. Look for a rebound and a post season spot in 2017.

The Foley Lions will play in Class 7A region one during the 2017 season.

The Lions enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Lions could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Foley came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

The Lions open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Robertsdale on Friday, August 25 at J.D. Sellers Stadium. Last year the Robertsdale Golden Bears finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in eighth place in Class 6A region one. The Golden Bears ended last season on a positive note with a win over Gulf Shores by a score of 34-13 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Foley and Robertsdale have met a total of 100 times on the football field. The Lions have a 77-17-6 record against the Golden Bears. They last met in 2016 with Foley winning by a score of 41-14.

College prospects include: Chris Armstrong (6-0, 197) quarterback,
