 2017 Preview

Hoover completed the 2016 season with a 12-2 record. Last year Hoover captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 7A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. The Buccaneers reeled off four straight playoff wins to claim the Class 7A State Championship by defeating McGill-Toolen at the Alabama Super Seven 17-7 in Auburn.

The defense was very stingy last season as Hoover ranked 8th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.2 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Buccaneers have gone 22-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Hoover has gone a combined 91-10. Their 90.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 7A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Hoover has gone a combined 273-61. Their 82.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 7A and 1st in the AHSAA. The Buccaneers have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1998.

The Buccaneers are led by head coach Josh Niblett who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 118-13 over the past nine seasons at Hoover. Under his direction the Buccaneers have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times. They have won six region crowns with Coach Niblett. Coach Niblett has won five state championships at Hoover, the last coming in 2016.

Coach Niblett's overall record as a head football coach in seventeen season stands at 183-45 (80.3%). His 183 wins rank 2nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Niblett's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of sixteen times and won seven region championships. He has a 48-10 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Niblett won a state championship at in 2004.

Over the past seventeen seasons, the Bucs have reached the title game winning a grand total of ten state championships in the highest classification.

The Hoover Buccaneers will play in Class 7A region three during the 2017 season. The Buccaneers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 70-43 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 7A and 16th in the AHSAA.

The Buccaneers enter the 2017 season having won 12 straight region games.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Hoover has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Buccaneers enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the North in the Class 7A title game. The Buccaneers have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 1999 and this year should be no exception.

The Buccaneers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Grayson GA on Friday, August 25.

Hoover and Grayson GA have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Buccaneers have a 0-2-0 record against Grayson GA. They last met in 2016 with Grayson GA winning by a score of 36-14.

Hoover returns 7A All-State Senior kicker Barret Pickering. He was named to the first team last season. The Buccaneers also return Senior defensive back Chase Brown. He was named to the second team. The Buccaneers also return Senior offensive lineman Mike Maye. He was named to the honorable mention team.

College prospects include: Barret Pickering (6-0, 170) kicker, Jacob Bodden (6-5, 303) offensive guard, Khamari Brown (6-2, 280) defensive end, Michael Maye (6-3, 290) offensive lineman, Mike Maye (6-3, 280) offensive tackle, Shedrick Jackson (6-2, 198) receiver, Vonte Brackett (, 0) running back,
