2017 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Greenville finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. Last year Greenville just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region two with a 2-4 region record. The Tigers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 11-1 record in 2015. Since 2010, Greenville has gone a combined 49-30. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Greenville has managed to compile a record of 177-116. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 5A and 93rd in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach Josh McLendon who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 13-8 over the past two seasons at Greenville. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach McLendon. Coach McLendon's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 31-13 (70.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach McLendon's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship. The Greenville Tigers will play in Class 5A region two during the 2017 season. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-35 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 5A and 2nd in the AHSAA. The Tigers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season. Greenville came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Tigers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Beauregard on Friday, September 1 at Hornet Stadium. Last year the Beauregard Hornets finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in second place in Class 5A region four. The Hornets won the Class 5A State Championship last season when they defeated Wenonah by a score of 33-13 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. Greenville and Beauregard have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 3-2-0 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2016 with Beauregard winning by a score of 39-13. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
