 2017 Preview 


       Homewood completed the 2016 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region five, the Patriots earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Homewood's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Minor by a score of 42-21.

       Homewood took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2008. The Patriots lost as many games as in any season since 2008.

       Since 2010, Homewood has gone a combined 52-26. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 6A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Homewood has gone a combined 218-87. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 6A and 21st in the AHSAA. The Patriots have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.

       The Patriots are led by head coach Ben Berguson who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 23-12 over the past three seasons at Homewood. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Berguson.

       Coach Berguson's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 29-18 (61.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Berguson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won one region championship.

       The Homewood Patriots will play in Class 6A region five during the 2017 season.

       The Patriots will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season.

      Ty Hatcher returns for his Senior season after completing 71 of 128 passes for 835 yards and 11 TDs. He also rushed for 51 yards. Larkin Williams returns for his Junior season after completing 59 of 124 for 698 yards and 6 touchdowns.

      Senior Nick McCoy returns after rushing for 392 yards on 77 carries and scoring touchdowns. Senior Tyshawn Buckner also returns after catching 37 passes for 393 yards and 2 touchdowns.

      The defense returns Senior defensive back C.D. Daniels who was in on 7 interceptions and Senior free safety Kris Wilkin who registered 76 tackles last season.

       The Patriots open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Pelham on Thursday, August 24 at Ned Bearden Stadium. Last year the Pelham Panthers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 6A region three. The Panthers ended last season on a positive note with a win over John Carroll by a score of 60-41 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Homewood and Pelham have met a total of 24 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 17-7-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2016 with Homewood winning by a score of 21-14.
