2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ramsay completed the 2016 season with a 13-2 record. Last year Ramsay captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Rams. The Rams reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 6A State Championship by defeating Opelika at the Alabama Super Seven 21-16 in Auburn. No team at Ramsay ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The 495 points scored by the Rams last year were a team record in a single season. The Rams hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Nelson saw improvement as they won thirteen games following a 7-4 record in 2015. Ramsay is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only five seasons. They have managed a record of 33-25 over the past five years. The Rams are led by head coach Reuben Nelson who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 33-25 over the past five seasons at Ramsay. Under his direction the Rams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Nelson. Coach Nelson led Ramsay to a state championship in 2016. Coach Nelson's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 73-53 (57.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Nelson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times and won three region championships. Following up on the best season ever at Ramsay, Coach Nelson will have the Rams believing they can repeat as state champions this year. The Ramsay Rams will play in Class 6A region five during the 2017 season. The Rams have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-47 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 6A and 46th in the AHSAA. The Rams enter the 2017 season having won 9 straight region games. They have won 10 straight games on their home turf at Lawson Field. The Rams should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Rams are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Rams open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Pinson Valley on Friday, September 1 at Willie Adams Stadium. Last year the Pinson Valley Indians finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in third place in Class 6A region six. The Indians lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Austin by a score of 44-38. Ramsay and Pinson Valley have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Rams have a 2-5-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 2016 with Ramsay winning by a score of 31-15. College prospects include: Deshaun Oliver (6-3, 185) safety, Edward Collins (6-6, 290) offensive tackle, Starling Thomas (5-11, 165) cornerback, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
