2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pelham finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Pelham finished seventh in Class 6A region three with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 363 points last season. Pelham struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.3 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Pelham has gone a combined 27-45. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 6A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Pelham has managed to compile a record of 132-138. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 6A and 200th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Tom Causey who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 3-17 over the past two seasons at Pelham. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Causey. Coach Causey's overall record as a head football coach in seventeen season stands at 116-80 (59.2%). His 116 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Causey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times and won two region championships. Coach Causey won a state championship at in 2009. The Pelham Panthers will play in Class 6A region three during the 2017 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Panthers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season. After just 2 wins last year, Pelham will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Homewood on Thursday, August 24 at Ned Bearden Stadium. Last year the Homewood Patriots finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 6A region five. The Patriots lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Minor by a score of 42-21. Pelham and Homewood have met a total of 24 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 7-17-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2016 with Homewood winning by a score of 21-14. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
