 2017 Preview 


       Clay-Chalkville completed the 2016 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-2 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region six, the Cougars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Clay-Chalkville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Ramsay by a score of 38-28.

       The defense allowed a team record 370 points last season. The Cougars hope to get back closer to the 14-1 record in 2015.

       Since 2010, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 67-23. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 6A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 21 seasons, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 170-81. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 6A and 33rd in the AHSAA.

After eight seasons as the head football coach at Clay-Chalkville, Jerry Hood is stepping down. His teams went a combined 75-26 reaching the playoffs each year.

The 2014 team finished 15-0 capping off the season with the schools second state championship. His overall records stands at 103-52 in 13 seasons as a head coach.


Drew Gilmer, a longtime assistant at Clay-Chalkville, takes over for Jerry Hood.



       The Clay-Chalkville Cougars will play in Class 6A region six during the 2017 season. The Cougars have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 62-43 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 6A and 28th in the AHSAA.

       The Cougars should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

       The Cougars open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Florence on Friday, August 25 at Braly Municipal Stadium. Last year the Florence Falcons finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 6A region eight.

       Clay-Chalkville and Florence have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 3-2-0 record against the Falcons. They last met in 2016 with Clay-Chalkville winning by a score of 53-48.
