Jackson-Olin completed the 2016 season with a 8-3 record. With their 4-2 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region five, the Mustangs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Jackson-Olin's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Pinson Valley by a score of 31-5. The Mustangs improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 1999. The Mustangs won as many games as in any season since 1997. It marked the first time since the 1999 season that the Mustangs qualified for the playoffs. The Mustangs last playoff victory came during the 1997 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The Mustangs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Vakakes saw improvement as they won eight games following a 3-7 record in 2015. Since 2010, Jackson-Olin has gone a combined 23-48. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 6A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Jackson-Olin has managed to compile a record of 93-162. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 6A and 308th in the AHSAA. The Mustangs are led by head coach Tim Vakakes who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-25 over the past four seasons at Jackson-Olin. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Vakakes. Coach Vakakes' overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 16-25 (39.0%). The Mustangs won eight games in 2016, the most since 1997. The Jackson-Olin Mustangs will play in Class 6A region five during the 2017 season. The Mustangs will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season. The Mustangs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Woodlawn on Friday, August 25 at Lawson Field. Last year the Woodlawn Colonels finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 5A region five. The Colonels closed out the regular season with a loss to Parker by a score of 14-8. Jackson-Olin and Woodlawn have met a total of 27 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 9-17-1 record against the Colonels.
