Week 13 - Second Round Playoffs


The Playoffs are underway! On to the Super Seven! Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  Piedmont defeated Colbert County 38-21 in the second round of the state playoffs. They extend their state leading winning streak to 22 straight.

   *   Beauregard extends their string of 22 consecutive home wins after defeating Vigor 48-20 on the road.

   *   Maplesville has won 16 consecutive games on their opponent's home turf. They are the road warriors.

   *   Fyffe, who Cleveland 49-0, extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 223 games without being shutout.

   *   Class 3A region 5 accomplished something only done four time previously. All four teams have advanced to the quarterfinals. This happened previously: 2012 - 3A region 8, 2012 - 1A region 5, 2007 - 6A region 6 and 2006 - 5A region 8. 

   *   Park Crossing and Ramsay will venture into new territory this coming week. Neither team has ever gone this far in the playoffs. Other teams reaching the 3rd round of the playoffs in a while along with the last time include: Aliceville (2001), Blount (1998), Carroll (1989), LaFayette (1991), Oakman (1995), Scottsboro (1997), Tallassee (1999) and Wenonah (1993).

   *   Hoover is 17-2 in semi-final games. The Bucs take on Gadsden City next Friday for a chance at another trip to Auburn. Maplesville is 17-5 in the third round of the playoffs. Sweet Water is 10-2 in the third round. Something will have to give as the two teams meet next week. Blount is 7-0 in the third round.

   *   Coach Jamey Dubose won his 100th games according to our records. His record at Susan Moore, Prattville, Florence and Central Phenix City stands at 100-36 in 11 seasons as a head coach.

 * Central Clay County set a team record in a loss 48-14 to St. Pauls breaking the previous record set when they lost to Benjamin Russell 38-7 on 8/28/2015.

 * McGill-Toolen has won a team record 21 consecutive games since 10/2/2015.
 * Maplesville has won a team record 20 consecutive games since 10/2/2015.

 * Georgiana set a team record with a 12-0 record. That ties the previous mark of 12-1-0 in 1993.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
