Week 9

Which teams will qualify for the playoffs? We are much closer to knowing. The post season is three weeks away! Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  Piedmont extended their state leading winning streak to 19 with a 45-35 victory over Ohatchee.

  *  The best region in any classification? Region five in class 3A has compiled a record of 36-20. Take away their region games and they are an amazing 18-2 against outside competition.

  *  Washington County and St. Luke's may still be scoring touchdowns. The Bulldogs won 75-54 over St. Luke's in the sixth highest scoring game in history.

  *  J.F. Shields is still struggling to put a competitive team on the football field. They have allowed more than 50 points in twelve consecutive games. That is a state record. They have allowed 569 points in nine games and close the season next week against a great Linden team. The state record for points allowed in a season belongs to Woodville when they allowed 622 in 2009.

   *   B.T. Washington with a 5-3 record is off to a good start in 2016. They are 3-3 in region play and have qualified for the playoffs for the first time in school history. The team has also not won more games than they lost in any season since the school opened in 1991.

   *   Other teams with turnaround seasons include: Arab (1-9) to (6-3), Dale County (1-9) to (6-3), Horseshoe Bend (0-10) to (5-3), Houston County (0-10) to (6-3), Isabella (1-9) to (7-1), Lynn (1-9) to (7-2), Oxford (3-7) to (9-0) and West Morgan (0-10) to (6-3). Congrats to these teams on great starts to the 2016 season.

   *   Some teams are not faring so well in 2016. Teams that are not finding the success they enjoyed last year include; D.A.R. (8-3) to (1-7), Edgewood Academy (13-0) to (0-9), Fort Payne (8-3) to (0-8), Greenville (11-1) to (2-5), Priceville (8-3) to (0-8) and Ranburne (10-2) to (1-7).

   *   Demopolis was shutout by Enterprise 42-0. They had gone 171 games since last being shutout by UMS-Wright in 2002.

   *   New Brockton defeated #9 Goshen. It is their first victory over a ranked opponent since the 1989 season. Tarrant also pulled of the upset in a 21-20 win over #10 Cleveland. It is their first victory over a ranked foe since 2006.

   *   Barbour County leads the state for most consecutive losses with 29 in a row following a 34-20 loss to Cottonwood.

   *   Bullock County has lost 52 consecutive region games.

   *   G. W. Long defeated Samson 30-21 to extend their 32 game regular season winning streak.

   *   Tanner has a streak of 52 consecutive region wins. The Rattlers defeated Cold Springs 50-21 to extend this streak.

   *   St. Paul's saw their streak of 21 straight wins on the home field come to an end against Vigor by a score of 38-35. Beauregard takes over with a string of 20 consecutive home wins after beating Cleburne County 54-14 at home.

   *   Maplesville has now won 16 consecutive games on their opponent's home turf.

   *   Fyffe, who blanked Section 62-0, extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 219 games without being shutout.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 183 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs beat up on rival Vestavia Hills 38-7.

   *   Fred Yancey, the head football coach at Briarwood, has amassed a record of 250-90 in 27 seasons for the Lions. The Lions are 7-1 this year after defeating Shelby County 43-21 on Friday night.

   *   According to our records Lauderdale County joined the 500 win club with a 37-14 win over Colbert Heights. Their overall records now stands at 500-388-25.
