Week 1

The 2017 season began this week with a partial schedule of games. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  Piedmont saw their twenty-five game winning streak come to an end against Rockmart GA by a score of 36-22 in the season opener. Maplesville now has the state's longest winning streak at 23 games and will open the season this coming week after defeating Fyffe in the Champions Challenge.

   *   Barbour County hopes to end a string of thirty-two consecutive losses this season. They are followed by Brilliant and J.F. Shields with twenty-seven straight losses. The streaks are not close to the longest in state history behind R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row.

   *   Bullock County has lost 52 consecutive region games in a row but do not begin region play for a couple of weeks. Southeastern has lost 32 straight region contests.

   *  The G.W. Long Rebels have won 34 straight regular season games. The Rebels open up this coming week against Dale County. Gordo saw their streak of 30 straight regular season wins snapped against Fayette County on Friday with a 18-14 loss.

   *   Tanner has a streak of 53 consecutive region wins with no signs of slowing down this year. The Rattlers open region play in two weeks with a new head coach in Maurice Belser. Maplesville is riding a streak of 47 consecutive region victories.

   *   The Hornets of state champion Beauregard enter the 2017 season with a string of 23 consecutive home wins. The Hornets open the season at home against Greenville on September 1st. Bessemer Academy and Monroe Academy lead the AISA schools with 28 game home winning streaks.

   *    Maplesville has won 21 consecutive road games. The Red Devils open the season this coming week against Resurrection MS on September 1st and will be playing on the road.

   *   Maplesville has scored twenty or more points in 38 consecutive games. The Red Devils defeated Fyffe in the Champions Challenge 20-7 last week but the game will not count as a regular season contest.

   *   Fyffe hopes to avoid the dreaded shutout and extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 221 games without being shutout. The Red Devils open the season on Friday against Geraldine.

   *   The Davidson Warriors saw their streak of 19 season opening wins in a row snapped in a 3-0 loss to Daphne. The longest streaks now belong to Pleasant Grove and Southern Choctaw at fourteen season opening victories in a row. Both teams open their season next Friday night.

   *   Carver Montgomery saw their string of consecutive games scoring halted at 134 in a 27-0 loss to Auburn. Berry Fayette also had their streak ended at 129 games in a 25-0 setback against Curry. The shutout by Curry was the school's first blanking of an opponent since the 2008 season.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 186 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs open the 2017 season in a very familiar spot as the #1 team in 7A.
