Piedmont completed the 2016 season with a 15-0 record. Last year Piedmont captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Bulldogs reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 3A State Championship by defeating Mobile Christian at the Alabama Super Seven 22-12 in Auburn. No team at Piedmont ever won more games in a season than the fifteen victories last year. The 622 points scored by the Bulldogs last year were a team record in a single season. The high-scoring Piedmont offense ranked 18th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.5 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 29-1 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Piedmont has gone a combined 83-11. Their 88.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 3A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Piedmont has managed to compile a record of 186-109. Their 63.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 3A and 68th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2004. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Steve Smith who is entering his twelveth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 123-23 over the past eleven seasons at Piedmont. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times. They have won five region crowns with Coach Smith. Coach Smith has won three state championships at Piedmont, the last coming in 2016. Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-two season stands at 208-68 (75.4%). His 208 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-one times and won eleven region championships. He has a 38-18 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. The Bulldogs will be working hard to replace graduated seniors and make another run toward a third straight state championship. The Piedmont Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region five during the 2017 season. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 62-42 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 3A and 20th in the AHSAA. Region five will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Bulldogs enter the 2017 season riding a 25 game winning streak. They have also won 15 consecutive regular season games. Piedmont has won 20 consecutive region games. They have won 19 straight games on their home turf at Field of Champions. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Piedmont has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region five and could very well be representing the North in the Class 3A title game. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2005 and this year should be no exception. The offense returns Senior Lee Stanley who rushed for 2,056 yards on 159 carries and 19 touchdowns. Junior Layton New who rushed for for 366 yards on 51 carries and 2 touchdowns. Senior Cardavion Myers returns after catching 23 passes for 646 yards and 8 TDs. He also intercepted four passes on defense. Senior Darien Bossie returns after catching 38 passes for 869 yards and 15 TDs. The defense returns Senior nose guard Logan Beadles who got in on 79 tackles and Junior cornerback Kaedon Jenkins who collected 4 interceptions last year. The Bulldogs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Rockmart GA on Friday, August 25. Piedmont and Rockmart GA have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 1-1-0 record against Rockmart GA. They last met in 1926 with Piedmont winning by a score of 12-0. Piedmont returns 3A All-State Senior defensive back Cardavion Myers. He was named to the first team last season. The Bulldogs also return Senior running back Lee Stanley. He was named to the second team. The Bulldogs also return Senior defensive lineman Logan Beadles.
