 2017 Preview 


       Weaver completed the 2016 season with a 9-4 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region five, the Bearcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Weaver lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Piedmont team by a score of 52-28.

       The Bearcats improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2011. The Bearcats won as many games as in any season since 2005.

       Since 2010, Weaver has gone a combined 38-40. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 3A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Weaver has managed to compile a record of 130-152. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 3A and 234th in the AHSAA.

       The Bearcats are led by head coach Daryl Hamby who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 38-40 over the past seven seasons at Weaver. Under his direction the Bearcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hamby.

       Coach Hamby's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 38-40 (48.7%).

       The Weaver Bearcats will play in Class 3A region five during the 2017 season. The Bearcats have one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 69-45 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 3A and 23rd in the AHSAA.

       Region five will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Bearcats will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season.

      

       The Bearcats open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Hayden on Friday, August 25 at Robert W. Reid Stadium. Last year the Hayden Wildcats finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 5A region six. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Fairfield by a score of 14-7.

       Weaver and Hayden have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bearcats have a 2-0-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2016 with Weaver winning by a score of 42-21.

       Weaver returns 3A All-State Senior offensive lineman Riley Benavides. He was named to the first team last season.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
