Handley completed the 2016 season with a 13-2 record. Last year Handley captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-1 record. The Tigers reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 4A State Championship by defeating Madison Academy at the Alabama Super Seven 30-7 in Auburn. The Tigers hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Strain saw improvement as they won thirteen games following a 8-3 record in 2015. Over the past two seasons the Tigers have gone 21-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Handley has gone a combined 61-25. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Handley has managed to compile a record of 189-115. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 4A and 75th in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach Larry Strain who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 21-5 over the past two seasons at Handley. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Strain. Coach Strain led Handley to a state championship in 2016. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. Sophomore Devontae Houston returns after rushing for 503 yards on 64 carries and scoring 3 touchdowns. The Tigers open the 2017 season at home against region opponent Tallassee on Friday, September 8 at Wright Field. Last year the Tallassee Tigers finished with an overall record of 9-4 and in second place in Class 4A region three. The Tigers lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Andalusia by a score of 51-7. Handley and Tallassee have met a total of 33 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 16-15-2 record against the Tigers.
