2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Guntersville completed the 2016 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 5A region seven, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Guntersville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Russellville by a score of 35-28. The Wildcats had some tough luck last season as three of their five losses were by less than eight points. The Wildcats hope to get back closer to the 12-1 record in 2015. The defense was very stingy last season as Guntersville ranked 23rd in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.9 points a game. Since 2010, Guntersville has gone a combined 59-22. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Guntersville has managed to compile a record of 193-103. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 5A and 58th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Lance Reese who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 59-22 over the past seven seasons at Guntersville. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Reese. Coach Reese's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 59-22 (72.8%). The Guntersville Wildcats will play in Class 5A region seven during the 2017 season. The Wildcats should be in contention for a playoff spot in region seven this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. The Wildcats open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Oneonta on Friday, September 1 at Chorba-Lee Stadium. Last year the Oneonta Redskins finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 4A region five. The Redskins closed out the regular season with a loss to Piedmont by a score of 45-9. Guntersville and Oneonta have met a total of 35 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 19-16-0 record against the Redskins. They last met in 2016 with Guntersville winning by a score of 23-0. Guntersville returns 5A All-State Senior receiver CJ Williamson.
