 2017 Preview

Oneonta finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Oneonta finished seventh in Class 4A region five with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Redskins lost as many games as in any season since 1999.

Oneonta was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Redskins want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.4 points a game.

Since 2010, Oneonta has gone a combined 65-25. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Oneonta has gone a combined 209-101. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 4A and 41st in the AHSAA.

Don Jacobs resigned as the head football coach at Oneonta after seven seasons and a 65025 record. His stint included a state championship in 2013 and two other Super Six appearances.

Brandon Herring takes over the head coaching duties at Oneonta in 2017. He spent the past two seasons at the high school level working as an assistant coach at Gadsden City and Athens.

A graduate of Hueytown, Herring has worked as an assistant at UAB and Samford.

The Oneonta Redskins will play in Class 4A region five during the 2017 season.

It will be an uphill battle for the Redskins if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season.

The Redskins open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Guntersville on Friday, September 1 at Chorba-Lee Stadium. Last year the Guntersville Wildcats finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 5A region seven. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Russellville by a score of 35-28.

Oneonta and Guntersville have met a total of 35 times on the football field. The Redskins have a 16-19-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2016 with Guntersville winning by a score of 23-0.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
