 2017 Preview 


       Etowah completed the 2016 season with a 9-3 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region seven, the Blue Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Etowah reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Mortimer Jordan by a score of 44-30.

       Since 2010, Etowah has gone a combined 52-27. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Etowah has gone a combined 202-96. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 5A and 34th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2009.

       The Blue Devils are led by head coach Drew Noles who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 29-16 over the past four seasons at Etowah. Under his direction the Blue Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Noles.

       Coach Noles' overall record as a head football coach in seventeen season stands at 109-79 (58.0%). His 109 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Noles' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirteen times .

       The Etowah Blue Devils will play in Class 5A region seven during the 2017 season.

       Etowah enters the 2017 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Jim Glover Field.

       The Blue Devils should be considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Devils have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2009 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

      Senior Cory Thomas Jr. returns after rushing for 1,460 yards on 176 carries and scoring 15 touchdowns.

      Senior Caleb Horton also returns after rushing for 809 yards on 98 carries and scoring 4 touchdowns. He also gained 208 yards receiving. Junior Emil Smith returns after catching 41 passes for 715 yards and 7 touchdowns.

      The defense returns Junior outside linebacker Carter Dingler who registered 72 tackles and Junior DE Jamin Graham with his 9 sacks for 49 yards in losses last season.

       The Blue Devils open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Southside Gadsden on Friday, August 25 at Jim Glover Field. Last year the Southside Gadsden Panthers finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 6A region seven. The Panthers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Glencoe by a score of 28-21 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Etowah and Southside Gadsden have met a total of 44 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 30-13-1 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2016 with Southside Gadsden winning by a score of 48-33.

       Etowah returns 5A All-State Junior receiver Emil Smith. He was named to the second team last season. The Blue Devils also return Senior kicker Raul Hernandez. He was named to the honorable mention team.
