2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Robertsdale finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Robertsdale finished eighth in Class 6A region one with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 361 points last season. The Golden Bears have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2004 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Golden Bears last playoff victory came during the 2001 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Robertsdale was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Golden Bears want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.4 points a game. Robertsdale struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.1 points a game. The Golden Bears would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Robertsdale football program has struggled with a record of 18-52. Over the past 25 seasons, Robertsdale has not won much with a record of 77-179. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 6A and 344th in the AHSAA. The Golden Bears have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2001. The Golden Bears are led by head coach Brian Campbell who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 11-39 over the past five seasons at Robertsdale. The Golden Bears have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Campbell. Coach Campbell's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 11-39 (22.0%). The Golden Bears have not had a winning season since 2001. It was also the last time they won a playoff game. The Robertsdale Golden Bears will play in Class 6A region one during the 2017 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Golden Bears if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just 2 wins last year, Robertsdale will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Golden Bears open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Foley on Friday, August 25 at J.D. Sellers Stadium. Last year the Foley Lions finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 7A region one. The Lions closed out the regular season with a loss to Theodore by a score of 35-10. Robertsdale and Foley have met a total of 99 times on the football field. The Golden Bears have a 17-76-6 record against the Lions. They last met in 2016 with Foley winning by a score of 41-14.
