2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Elba completed the 2016 season with a 10-3 record. Last year Elba captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Elba lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Aliceville team by a score of 52-44. The high-scoring Elba offense ranked 13th in the AHSAA. They averaged 43.2 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Tigers have gone 24-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Elba has gone a combined 77-16. Their 83.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 2A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Elba has managed to compile a record of 182-120. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 2A and 89th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2006. The Tigers are led by head coach Ed Rigby who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 45-9 over the past four seasons at Elba. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Rigby. Coach Rigby led Elba to a state championship in 2015. Coach Rigby's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 45-9 (83.3%). The Elba Tigers will play in Class 2A region three during the 2017 season. The Tigers enter the 2017 season having won 22 straight region games. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Elba has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Tigers enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 2A Super Seven come December. The Tigers have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2006 and this year should be no exception. The Tigers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Pike County on Friday, September 1 at Bulldog Stadium. Last year the Pike County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in first place in Class 3A region three. The Bulldogs lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Bayside Academy by a score of 24-7. Elba and Pike County have met a total of 37 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 22-15-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2016 with Elba winning by a score of 36-22. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
