2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Calhoun finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Calhoun finished seventh in Class 2A region three with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 555 points last season. The Tigers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 1999 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Tigers last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Calhoun averaged scoring just 7.2 points a game. The Tigers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 55.5 points a game. The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-20 record. Since 2010, the Calhoun football program has struggled with a record of 10-60. Over the past 25 seasons, Calhoun has not won much with a record of 51-200. Their 20.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 2A and 374th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1999. Bill Lamar leaves Calhoun after one year with a 0-10 record. Ervin Starr will coach both football and basketball at Calhoun in 2017. Starr played at Cherokee County under legendary coach Bobby Joe Johnson. The Calhoun Tigers will play in Class 2A region three during the 2017 season. The Tigers enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 21 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region three. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Calhoun will be to simply win some games. The Tigers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Keith on Friday, September 1 at J.V. Caldwell Stadium. Last year the Keith Bears finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 2A region four. The Bears lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to New Brockton by a score of 45-16. Calhoun and Keith have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 5-14-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2016 with Keith winning by a score of 56-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
