 2017 Preview 


       Calera completed the 2016 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region three, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Calera reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Carroll by a score of 28-8.

       Since 2010, Calera has gone a combined 53-26. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Calera has managed to compile a record of 152-121. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 5A and 116th in the AHSAA.

       The Eagles are led by head coach Andrew Zow who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 8-4 record in his first season at Calera. The Eagles saw improvement from a 7-4 record the season before coach Zow arrived. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Zow.

       Coach Zow's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 21-33 (38.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Zow's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

       The Calera Eagles will play in Class 5A region three during the 2017 season.

       Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Eagles should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

       The Eagles open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Mae Jemison on Friday, August 25 at Ricky M. Cairns Memorial Stadium. Last year the Mae Jemison Jaguars finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 5A region eight. The Jaguars lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Etowah by a score of 44-27.

       Calera and Mae Jemison have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 1-1-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 2016 with Calera winning by a score of 25-6.
