2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Marbury finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Marbury finished seventh in Class 5A region three with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bulldogs have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2008 season and would love to end that streak this year. Marbury struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 41.9 points a game. The Bulldogs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Marbury has gone a combined 22-48. Their 31.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marbury has managed to compile a record of 115-144. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 5A and 251st in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach James Brothers who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Marbury. The Bulldogs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Brothers. Coach Brothers' overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 20-31 (39.2%). Over the course of his career, Coach Brothers' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The Marbury Bulldogs will play in Class 5A region three during the 2017 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Bulldogs if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season. After just 2 wins last year, Marbury will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Senior Brandon Wilkes returns after catching 16 passes for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns. Senior Keyshawn Palmer returns after rushing for 1,394 yards on 175 carries and scoring 13 touchdowns. The Bulldogs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent B.T. Washington on Friday, August 25 at Eagles Stadium. Last year the B.T. Washington Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 5A region two. The Golden Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Vigor by a score of 47-0. Marbury and B.T. Washington have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 1-3-0 record against the Golden Eagles. They last met in 2016 with B.T. Washington winning by a score of 64-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
