2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodlawn finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Woodlawn finished seventh in Class 6A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Colonels have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Colonels last playoff victory came during the 1994 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Woodlawn averaged scoring just 6.8 points a game. The Colonels would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Woodlawn football program has struggled with a record of 15-46. Over the past 25 seasons, Woodlawn has not won much with a record of 74-178. Their 29.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 5A and 347th in the AHSAA. The Colonels are led by head coach Cornelius Turner who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Woodlawn. The Colonels have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Turner. Coach Turner's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 1-9 (10.0%). The Woodlawn Colonels will play in Class 5A region five during the 2016 season. The Colonels may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 6A to 5A. They will compete in region five this year. The Colonels enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 9 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Colonels will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five. The Colonels open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Jackson-Olin on Friday, August 19 at J-O Field. Last year the Jackson-Olin Mustangs finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region five. The Mustangs closed out the regular season with a loss to Carver Birmingham by a score of 18-7. Woodlawn and Jackson-Olin have met a total of 27 times on the football field. The Colonels have a 17-9-1 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2013 with Jackson-Olin winning by a score of 13-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
