 2016 Preview

Wenonah completed the 2015 season with a 10-1 record. The Dragons cruised through the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record going into the post season. Last year Wenonah captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Dragons since the 1997 season. Wenonah reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Mortimer Jordan by a score of 30-20.

The Dragons hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Cheatham saw improvement as they won ten games following a 4-5 record in 2014.

The defense was very stingy last season as Wenonah ranked 5th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 9.3 points a game.

Since 2010, Wenonah has gone a combined 37-24. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 5A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Wenonah has managed to compile a record of 141-112. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 5A and 124th in the AHSAA.

The Dragons are led by head coach Ronald Cheatham who is entering his twenty-eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 148-126 over the past twenty-seven seasons at Wenonah. Under his direction the Dragons have qualified for the playoffs a total of sixteen times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Cheatham.

Coach Cheatham's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-seven season stands at 148-126 (54.0%). His 148 wins rank 25th among active coaches in the AHSAA.

Coach Cheatham needs two wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone.

The Wenonah Dragons will play in Class 5A region five during the 2016 season.

The Dragons enter the 2016 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak. Wenonah has won 7 consecutive region games.

The Dragons should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

The Dragons open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Midfield on Thursday, August 25 at Bell-Culpepper Stadium. Last year the Midfield Patriots finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in second place in Class 3A region three. The Patriots lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Opp by a score of 49-20.

Wenonah and Midfield have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Dragons have a 14-4-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2015 with Wenonah winning by a score of 33-0.

Wenonah returns 5A All-State Senior linebacker Giovanni Williams. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

College prospects include: Giovanni Williams (6-0, 230) inside linebacker,
