2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Briarwood completed the 2015 season with a 5-7 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region five, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Briarwood reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Austin by a score of 27-0. Briarwood was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.8 points a game. Since 2010, Briarwood has gone a combined 49-28. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 5A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Briarwood has gone a combined 232-87. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 5A and 18th in the AHSAA. The Lions are led by head coach Fred Yancey who is entering his twenty-seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 243-89 over the past twenty-six seasons at Briarwood. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-four times. They have won fourteen region crowns with Coach Yancey. Coach Yancey has won three state championships at Briarwood, the last coming in 2003. Coach Yancey's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-six season stands at 243-89 (73.2%). His 243 wins rank 5th among active coaches in the AHSAA. He has a 51-21 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. The Briarwood Lions will play in Class 5A region five during the 2016 season. The Lions may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 6A to 5A. They will compete in region five this year. The Lions have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-44 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 5A and 28th in the AHSAA. The Lions should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 1992 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2016. Quarterback William Gray returns for his senior season after completing 184 of 309 passes for 1,799 yards and 5 touchdowns as a junior last season. The Lions open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Chelsea on Friday, August 26 at Richard Conkle Stadium. Last year the Chelsea Hornets finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 6A region three. The Hornets lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Blount by a score of 41-28. Briarwood and Chelsea have met a total of 34 times on the football field. The Lions have a 24-9-1 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2015 with Chelsea winning by a score of 21-16. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
