 2016 Preview

Cordova completed the 2015 season with a 13-1 record. The Blue Devils cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Cordova captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Blue Devils since the 2009 season. Cordova made a nice playoff run in 2015, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Fayette County team by the score of 32-0.

The Blue Devils won as many games as in any season since 2009.

Over the past two seasons the Blue Devils have gone 23-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Cordova has gone a combined 44-27. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 4A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Cordova has managed to compile a record of 181-114. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 4A and 82nd in the AHSAA.

The Blue Devils are led by head coach Jimmy Gay who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 25-13 over the past three seasons at Cordova. Under his direction the Blue Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Gay.

Coach Gay's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 46-17 (73.0%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gay's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won two region championships. Coach Gay won a state championship at Parrish in 2003.

The Cordova Blue Devils will play in Class 4A region six during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Blue Devils remain in 4A but move from region five over to region six. The Blue Devils have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 74-50 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 4A and 35th in the AHSAA.

The Blue Devils enter the 2016 season riding a 11 game regular season winning streak. Cordova has won 6 consecutive region games.

The Blue Devils should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Blue Devils are making another deep run into the playoffs.

Running back Javion Hill returns for his junior season after rushing for 1,342 yards and 18 touchdowns as a sophomore last season.

The defense will be led by senior defensive end Garrett Stacks who registered 160 tackles last season.

The Blue Devils open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Mortimer Jordan on Thursday, August 18 at Hudson/Kirby Stadium. Last year the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in second place in Class 5A region six. The Blue Devils lost in the Class 5A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by St. Pauls. They final score was 41-26 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn.

Cordova and Mortimer Jordan have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 3-1-0 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 1991 with Cordova winning by a score of 49-32.

Cordova returns 4A All-State Senior offensive lineman Deangelo Woods. He was named to the second team last season. The Blue Devils also return Junior athlete Kolbi Fuqua,. He was named to the first team. The Blue Devils also return Senior defensive lineman Patrick Fleming. He was named to the first team.
