2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Verbena completed the 2015 season with a 8-4 record. With their 2-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region three, the Red Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Verbena reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Brantley by a score of 47-26. The Red Devils improved in 2015 with their first winning season since 2009. The Red Devils won as many games as in any season since 1997. It marked the first time since the 2006 season that the Red Devils qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, Verbena has gone a combined 20-42. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 2A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Verbena has managed to compile a record of 113-154. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 2A and 266th in the AHSAA. The Red Devils are led by head coach Mike Harris who is entering his fourteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 44-89 over the past thirteen seasons at Verbena. Under his direction the Red Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Harris. Coach Harris' overall record as a head football coach in seventeen season stands at 55-119 (31.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Harris' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . The Verbena Red Devils will play in Class 2A region four during the 2016 season. The Red Devils move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. Verbena will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. It will be an uphill battle for the Red Devils if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. Unfortunately, Verbena finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. The Red Devils open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Isabella on Friday, August 26 at Bill Nabors Stadium. Last year the Isabella Mustangs finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 1A region three. The Mustangs closed out the regular season with a loss to Thorsby by a score of 48-27. Verbena and Isabella have met a total of 91 times on the football field. The Red Devils have a 52-36-3 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2015 with Verbena winning by a score of 50-17. Verbena returns 1A All-State Senior linebacker Anthony Miller. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
