 2016 Preview

Isabella finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Isabella finished sixth in Class 1A region three with a 0-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Mustangs lost as many games as in any season since 2006. The defense allowed a team record 436 points last season. The Mustangs hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 6-3 record in 2014.

Isabella struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 43.6 points a game.

Since 2010, Isabella has gone a combined 30-32. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 1A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Isabella has managed to compile a record of 108-155. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 1A and 272nd in the AHSAA.

Scott Booth leaves Isabella after six seasons with a combines 30-32 record. His teams reached the playoffs on four occasion but failed to win a post season contest. His last team finished the 2015 season with a 1-9 mark.

Tate Leonard, a 2000 graduate of Isabella, will take over the football program at the school in the fall of 2016. Leonard has been a member of the Maplesville staff since 2006 where he worked on the defensive side of the ball. This will be his first head coaching position.

The Isabella Mustangs will play in Class 1A region three during the 2016 season. The Mustangs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 59-51 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 1A and 111st in the AHSAA.

The Mustangs enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 8 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Mustangs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region three.

The Mustangs open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Verbena on Friday, August 26 at Bill Nabors Stadium. Last year the Verbena Red Devils finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in fourth place in Class 1A region three. The Red Devils lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Brantley by a score of 47-26.

Isabella and Verbena have met a total of 92 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 36-53-3 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2015 with Verbena winning by a score of 50-17.

Isabella returns 1A All-State Junior athlete Jaqarise Stacy. He was named to the second team last season.
