 2016 Preview

Opelika completed the 2015 season with a 12-1 record. The Bulldogs cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Opelika captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Opelika lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Spanish Fort team by a score of 21-13.

No team at Opelika ever won more games in a season than the twelve victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 2006.

The high-scoring Opelika offense ranked 14th in the AHSAA. They averaged 42.0 points a game.

The Bulldogs defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 31st in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 14.0 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 21-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Opelika has gone a combined 50-20. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 6A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Opelika has gone a combined 219-73. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 6A and 10th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1995.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Brian Blackmon who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 56-23 over the past seven seasons at Opelika. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Blackmon.

Coach Blackmon's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 56-23 (70.9%).

The Opelika Bulldogs will play in Class 6A region three during the 2016 season.

The Bulldogs enter the 2016 season riding a 14 game regular season winning streak. Opelika has won 12 consecutive region games. They have won 7 straight games on their home turf at Bulldog Stadium.

The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 6A Super Seven come December. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2009 and this year should be no exception.

The Bulldogs have put together a streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons and hope to extend that streak in 2016.

Wide receiver Jaleel Heard returns for his senior year after catching 38 passes for 567 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2015.

The defense will be led by senior safety Zack Yancey who registered 150 tackles last season.

The Bulldogs open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Carver Columbus GA on Friday, August 19 at Bulldog Stadium.

Opelika and Carver Columbus GA have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 1-2-0 record against Carver Columbus GA. They last met in 1981 with Carver Columbus GA winning by a score of 14-6.

Opelika returns 6A All-State Senior punter Jake Bentley. He was named to the first team last season.

College prospects include: Rakavius Chambers (6-3, 275) offensive center, Will Boler (6-0, 175) safety,
