2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pelham finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Pelham finished seventh in Class 6A region five with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. No team at Pelham ever lost more games in a season than the nine they lost last year. The last time they lost as many was back in 1981. Pelham was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.3 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Pelham has gone a combined 25-37. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 6A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Pelham has managed to compile a record of 136-134. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 6A and 179th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Tom Causey who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Pelham. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Causey. Coach Causey's overall record as a head football coach in sixteen season stands at 114-72 (61.3%). His 114 wins rank 42nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Causey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times and won two region championships. Coach Causey won a state championship at Demopolis in 2009. The Pelham Panthers will play in Class 6A region three during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 6A but move from region five over to region three. The Panthers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 75-43 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 6A and 15th in the AHSAA. Region three will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. It will be an uphill battle for the Panthers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season. After just a single win last year, Pelham will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Panthers open the 2016 season on a neutral field against non-region opponent Homewood on Thursday, August 18 at Samford. Last year the Homewood Patriots finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in second place in Class 6A region five. The Patriots lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Clay-Chalkville by a score of 40-39. Pelham and Homewood have met a total of 24 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 7-17-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2015 with Homewood winning by a score of 54-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
