 2016 Preview

Leeds completed the 2015 season with a 13-2 record. Last year Leeds captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-1 record. The Green Wave reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 4A State Championship by defeating Fayette County at the Alabama Super Seven 55-7 in Auburn.

The 677 points scored by the Green Wave last year were a team record in a single season.

The high-scoring Leeds offense ranked 4th in the AHSAA. They averaged 45.1 points a game.

The Green Wave defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 2nd in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 8.5 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Green Wave have gone 27-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Leeds has gone a combined 65-21. Their 76.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 4A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Leeds has managed to compile a record of 189-116. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 4A and 72nd in the AHSAA.

Head football coach Keith Etheredge resigned his position at Leeds in February to accept the same position at Pell City. He led the Green Wave to four state championships in his ten seasons with the program including the last two.

Etheredge leaves behind a football program on top of Class 4A. His overall record at Leeds stands at 107-34 and his playoff record was 35-6 on the field. His teams won six region championships and never finished worse than third.

Lee Gibson resigned in February after seven seasons as the head football coach at Tuscaloosa County High. His teams finished a combined 42-36 but faltered in 2015 with an 0-10 record.

His teams did not win a region title during his tenure and managed just a 2-6 record in the postseason. He takes over a Leeds program in much better shape than the one he left behind.

Coach Gibson's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 42-36 (53.8%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gibson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times .

The Leeds Green Wave will play in Class 4A region three during the 2016 season.

The Green Wave enter the 2016 season riding a 12 game winning streak. They have also won 7 consecutive regular season games. They have won 8 straight games on their home turf at Homer Smiles Field.

The Green Wave should be considered one of the favorites for the region three championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Green Wave are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Green Wave have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2005 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The Green Wave are about to find out what life will be like without Coach Keith Etheridge. The fans are hopeful that it will be business as usual with more state championships in the future for the program.

The Green Wave open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Lincoln on Friday, August 19 at Keith Howard Memorial Stadium. Last year the Lincoln Golden Bears finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 5A region six. The Golden Bears ended last season on a positive note with a win over Childersburg by a score of 44-13 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Leeds and Lincoln have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Green Wave have a 13-5-0 record against the Golden Bears. They last met in 2013 with Leeds winning by a score of 12-6.

Leeds returns 4A All-State Senior defensive lineman Isiah Sharp-Perry. He was named to the first team last season.

College prospects include: Christian Smith (6-0, 267) defensive tackle, Isaiah Sharp-Perry (6-0, 242) defensive tackle, Tyler Rose (5-10, 156) cornerback,
