 2016 Preview

Piedmont completed the 2015 season with a 14-1 record. Last year Piedmont captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. The Bulldogs reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 3A State Championship by defeating Bayside Academy at the Alabama Super Seven 44-7 in Auburn.

No team at Piedmont ever won more games in a season than the fourteen victories last year. The 572 points scored by the Bulldogs last year were a team record in a single season. The Bulldogs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Smith saw improvement as they won fourteen games following a 8-4 record in 2014.

The defense was very stingy last season as Piedmont ranked 19th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.0 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 22-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Piedmont has gone a combined 68-11. Their 86.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 3A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Piedmont has managed to compile a record of 181-111. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 3A and 74th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2004.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Steve Smith who is entering his eleventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 108-23 over the past ten seasons at Piedmont. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Smith. Coach Smith has won two state championships at Piedmont, the last coming in 2015.

Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-one season stands at 193-68 (73.9%). His 193 wins rank 12th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty times and won ten region championships. He has a 33-18 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

Coach Smith needs seven wins this season to reach the coveted 200 win milestone.

The Piedmont Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region five during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 3A but move from region six over to region five. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 62-42 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 3A and 44th in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs enter the 2016 season riding a 10 game winning streak. They have also won 5 consecutive regular season games. Piedmont has won 11 consecutive region games. They have won 10 straight games on their home turf at Field of Champions.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Piedmont has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region five and could very well be representing the North in the Class 3A title game. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2005 and this year should be no exception.

Quarterback Taylor Hayes returns for his senior season after completing 103 of 188 passes for 1,760 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior last season. He also rushed for 1,560 yards and another 18 scores.

The defense will be led by senior linebacker Austin Brazier who registered 14 sacks last season. Chase Bobbitt also returns at defensive tackle after also collecting 14 sacks in 2015.

The Bulldogs open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Cedartown GA on Friday, August 19 at Field of Champions.

Piedmont and Cedartown GA have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 1-3-0 record against Cedartown GA. They last met in 1941 with Cedartown GA winning by a score of 38-0.

Piedmont returns 3A All-State Junior defensive back Cardavion Myers. He was named to the second team last season. The Bulldogs also return Senior defensive lineman Chase Bobbitt. He was named to the first team. The Bulldogs also return Senior offensive lineman Krae Keener. He was named to the honorable mention team. The Bulldogs also return Senior offensive lineman Mason Langley. He was named to the second team. The Bulldogs also return Senior quarterback Taylor Hayes. He was named to the first team.
