2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Deshler completed the 2015 season with a 5-6 record. With their 5-2 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region eight, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Deshler's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cherokee County by a score of 45-26. Deshler took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2001. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2001. The Tigers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just five games which followed a 13-2 record in 2014. Since 2010, Deshler has gone a combined 58-21. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 4A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Deshler has gone a combined 257-72. Their 78.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 4A and 4th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. The Tigers are led by head coach Mike Hand who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-6 record in his first season at Deshler. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hand. Coach Hand's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 14-38 (26.9%). Over the course of his career, Coach Hand's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The Deshler Tigers will play in Class 4A region eight during the 2016 season. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 76-38 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 4A and 5th in the AHSAA. The Tigers should be considered one of the favorites for the region eight championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Tigers have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 1983 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Tigers have qualified for the playoffs thirty-two consecutive seasons and will be in the hunt to extend that streak in 2016. Quarterback Hunter Hill returns for his senior season after completing 90 of 171 passes for 1,065 yards and 5 touchdowns as a junior last season. The Tigers open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Haleyville on Friday, August 19 at Howard Chappell Stadium. Last year the Haleyville Lions finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 4A region five. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to North Jackson by a score of 28-6. Deshler and Haleyville have met a total of 24 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 18-5-1 record against the Lions. They last met in 2007 with Deshler winning by a score of 44-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
