Russellville completed the 2015 season with a 11-2 record. Last year Russellville captured the region eight title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Russellville lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Alexandria team by a score of 22-14. The defense was very stingy last season as Russellville ranked 27th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.5 points a game. Since 2010, Russellville has gone a combined 48-22. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 5A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Russellville has gone a combined 233-79. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 5A and 11th in the AHSAA. The Golden Tigers are led by head coach Mark Heaton who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 19-5 over the past two seasons at Russellville. Under his direction the Golden Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Heaton. Coach Heaton's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 63-29 (68.5%). Quarterback Payton Nichols returns for his senior season after completing 72 of 111 passes for 1,057 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior last season. The Golden Tigers open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Deshler on Friday, August 26 at Tigers Stadium. Last year the Deshler Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in second place in Class 4A region eight. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Cherokee County by a score of 45-26. Russellville and Deshler have met a total of 97 times on the football field. The Golden Tigers have a 47-46-4 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2015 with Russellville winning by a score of 42-12. Russellville returns 5A All-State Senior offensive lineman Austin Stidham. He was named to the first team last season. The Golden Tigers also return Senior kicker Marvin Betancourt.
