Haleyville completed the 2016 season with a 9-2 record. Last year Haleyville captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Lions since the 1993 season. Haleyville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Hokes Bluff by a score of 24-8. Since 2010, Haleyville has gone a combined 50-28. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Haleyville has managed to compile a record of 146-131. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 4A and 156th in the AHSAA. Bo Culver stepped down as the head football coach at Haleyville to accept the same position at Deshler during the off season. His three teams at Haleyville finished with a record of 25-10 including a 2-3 record in the playoffs. Todd McNutt is a graduate of Haleyville and spent the past three seasons as the defensive coordinator at the school. He will assume the duties as the head football coach in 2017. This will be his first head coaching position. The Haleyville Lions will play in Class 4A region six during the 2017 season. The Lions should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Lions open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Deshler on Friday, August 25 at Memorial Stadium/Bubba Scott Field. Last year the Deshler Tigers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 4A region eight. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Muscle Shoals by a score of 35-7. Haleyville and Deshler have met a total of 25 times on the football field. The Lions have a 5-19-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2016 with Haleyville winning by a score of 35-12. Haleyville returns 4A All-State Junior quarterback Scott McAlpine.
