2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Winfield completed the 2016 season with a 7-4 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region six, the Pirates earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Winfield's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cherokee County by a score of 29-22. The Pirates had some tough luck last season as three of their four losses were by less than eight points. Since 2010, Winfield has gone a combined 46-30. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 4A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Winfield has managed to compile a record of 184-112. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 4A and 79th in the AHSAA. The Pirates are led by head coach David McKinney who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 29-16 over the past four seasons at Winfield. Under his direction the Pirates have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach McKinney. Coach McKinney's overall record as a head football coach in ten season stands at 81-38 (68.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach McKinney's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won three region championships. The Winfield Pirates will play in Class 4A region six during the 2017 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Pirates could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region six this season. Unfortunately, Winfield finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. The Pirates open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Sipsey Valley on Thursday, August 24. Last year the Sipsey Valley Bears finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 4A region four. Winfield and Sipsey Valley have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 2-0-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2016 with Winfield winning by a score of 40-15. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
