2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Deshler finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Deshler just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region eight with a 2-4 region record. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 1970. Deshler was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.9 points a game. Since 2010, Deshler has gone a combined 60-29. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Deshler has gone a combined 259-80. Their 76.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 4A and 8th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. Mike Hand resigned following the 2016 after just two seasons at Deshler. His 2016 team finished with a 2-8 record which was the worst record at the school since 1970. His two years produced a 7-14 record and 0-1 in the playoffs. Bo Culver comes over from three seasons at Haleyville where his teams finished a combined 25-10. He has also served as the head football coach at Phil Campbell and supports a 34-31 overall coaching record in six seasons. Coach Culver's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 34-31 (52.3%). Over the course of his career, Coach Culver's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship. The Deshler Tigers will play in Class 4A region eight during the 2017 season. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 72-43 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 4A and 10th in the AHSAA. With a little luck and some improvement, the Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season. Deshler came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. Senior Jacoby Belue returns after rushing for 517 yards on 46 carries and scoring 6 touchdowns. The Tigers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Haleyville on Friday, August 25 at Memorial Stadium/Bubba Scott Field. Last year the Haleyville Lions finished with an overall record of 9-2 and in first place in Class 4A region six. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Hokes Bluff by a score of 24-8. Deshler and Haleyville have met a total of 24 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 18-5-1 record against the Lions. They last met in 2016 with Haleyville winning by a score of 35-12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
