 2017 Preview 


       Georgiana completed the 2016 season with a 12-1 record. The Panthers cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Georgiana captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Georgiana lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Linden team by a score of 52-12.

       No team at Georgiana ever won more games in a season than the twelve victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 1993.

       The high-scoring Georgiana offense ranked 30th in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.1 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Panthers have gone 23-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Georgiana has gone a combined 38-39. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 1A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Georgiana has managed to compile a record of 151-135. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 1A and 155th in the AHSAA.

       The Panthers are led by head coach Ezell Powell who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 34-13 over the past four seasons at Georgiana. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Powell.

       Coach Powell's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 34-13 (72.3%).

       The Georgiana Panthers will play in Class 1A region two during the 2017 season.

       The Panthers enter the 2017 season riding a 14 game regular season winning streak. They have won 9 straight games on their home turf at Harmond Field.

       The Panthers should be considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Loachapoka on Friday, August 25 at Harmond Field. Last year the Loachapoka Indians finished with an overall record of 3-8 and in fourth place in Class 1A region three. The Indians lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Wadley by a score of 50-7.

       Georgiana and Loachapoka have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 3-0-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 2016 with Georgiana winning by a score of 44-22.

       Georgiana returns 1A All-State Senior linebacker Cameron Longmire. He was named to the first team last season. The Panthers also return Junior athlete Christian Williams. He was named to the honorable mention team. The Panthers also return Senior defensive back Jamarcus Sims. He was named to the second team. The Panthers also return Junior defensive lineman Lecedric Haynes. He was named to the honorable mention team.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
