 2017 Preview

Florala finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 0-8 record. Last year Florala finished eighth in Class 1A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Wildcats have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2007 season and would love to end that streak this year.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Florala averaged scoring just 8.1 points a game. The Wildcats also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 54.4 points a game.

The Wildcats would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-15 record. Since 2010, Florala has gone a combined 23-44. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 1A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Florala has managed to compile a record of 110-161. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 1A and 277th in the AHSAA.

Brad Rhodes leaves Florala after three seasons with a 8-19 record.

The Florala Wildcats hired Scott Mason to take over at the helm for the 2017 football season. Mason comes to Florala from Citronelle where he served as the offensive coordinator last year.

He was the head football coach at Fruitdale (2007-09) with a 15-16 record.

Coach Mason's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 15-16 (48.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Mason's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

The Wildcats begin the season with their seventh different head coach over the past eleven seasons.

The Florala Wildcats will play in Class 1A region two during the 2017 season. The Wildcats have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 47-41 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 1A and 106th in the AHSAA.

The Wildcats enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 8 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Wildcats will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Florala will be to simply win some games.

The Wildcats open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent J.U. Blacksher on Friday, September 1 at John M. Sawyer Memorial Stadium. Last year the J.U. Blacksher Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 2A region one. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to G.W. Long by a score of 54-21.

Florala and J.U. Blacksher have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 4-4-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2016 with J.U. Blacksher winning by a score of 55-6.
