 2017 Preview

Kinston finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Kinston finished seventh in Class 1A region two with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 2008. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 1987 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Kinston was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.8 points a game.

Kinston struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.4 points a game.

Since 2010, Kinston has gone a combined 31-45. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 1A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Kinston has not won much with a record of 76-192. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 1A and 355th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time.

Jonny Mitchell leaves Kinston after one season with a 1-9 record.

Jon Cooper arrives at Kinston after a season at Charles Henderson as an assistant coach. He previously was the head coach at Slocomb (2013-15) where his three teams finished a combined 21-13.

Coach Cooper's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 21-13 (61.8%). Over the course of his career, Coach Cooper's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times .

The Kinston Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region two during the 2017 season.

It will be an uphill battle for the Bulldogs if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just a single win last year, Kinston will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

The Bulldogs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent J.F. Shields on Friday, September 1 at Panther Field (The Pit). Last year the J.F. Shields Panthers finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in eighth place in Class 1A region one.

Kinston and J.F. Shields have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 2-0-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2010 with Kinston winning by a score of 60-8.
