 2017 Preview

Briarwood completed the 2016 season with a 12-2 record. Last year Briarwood captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Briarwood made a nice playoff run in 2016, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Wenonah team by the score of 14-8.

The Lions hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Yancey saw improvement as they won twelve games following a 5-7 record in 2015.

The defense was very stingy last season as Briarwood ranked 14th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.7 points a game.

Since 2010, Briarwood has gone a combined 61-30. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Briarwood has gone a combined 239-84. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 5A and 12th in the AHSAA.

The Lions are led by head coach Fred Yancey who is entering his twenty-eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 255-91 over the past twenty-seven seasons at Briarwood. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-five times. They have won fifteen region crowns with Coach Yancey. Coach Yancey has won three state championships at Briarwood, the last coming in 2003.

Coach Yancey's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-seven season stands at 255-91 (73.7%). His 255 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. He has a 54-22 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

The Briarwood Lions will play in Class 5A region five during the 2017 season. The Lions have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 65-51 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 5A and 63rd in the AHSAA.

The Lions enter the 2017 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak.

The Lions should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Lions are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Lions have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 1992 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

Senior Carson Eddy returns after catching 24 passes for 393 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Junior JR Tran-reno returns after rushing for 787 yards on 122 carries and scoring 4 touchdowns. He also gained 233 yards receiving.

The defense returns Senior free safety Carson Donnelly who registered 5 interceptions and Junior linebacker Mark Hand who was in on 117 tackles last season.

The Lions open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Chelsea on Friday, September 1 at Lions Pride Stadium. Last year the Chelsea Hornets finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 6A region three. The Hornets lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Bessemer City by a score of 31-23.

Briarwood and Chelsea have met a total of 34 times on the football field. The Lions have a 24-9-1 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2016 with Chelsea winning by a score of 43-15.

Briarwood returns 5A All-State Senior linebacker Gabe Russell. He was named to the first team last season.
