 2016 Preview

Sparkman completed the 2015 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Sparkman finished seventh in Class 7A region four with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Senators won as many games as in any season since 2006. The 336 points scored by the Senators last year were a team record in a single season. The Senators have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2006 season and would love to end that streak this year.

Sparkman had a very good offense last year, scoring 33.6 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 37.6 points per game.

Since 2010, the Sparkman football program has struggled with a record of 13-47.

Over the past 25 seasons, Sparkman has not won much with a record of 80-174. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 7A and 337th in the AHSAA. The Senators have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2006.

The Senators are led by head coach Chris Cagle who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 7-13 over the past two seasons at Sparkman. The Senators have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cagle.

Coach Cagle's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 9-31 (22.5%).

The Sparkman Senators will play in Class 7A region four during the 2016 season.

The Senators will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region four this season. Sparkman has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2006 but hope to return to the post season this year.

The Senators open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Athens on Friday, August 26 at Golden Eagle Stadium. Last year the Athens Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 6A region eight. The Golden Eagles ended last season on a positive note with a win over Deshler by a score of 56-7 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Sparkman and Athens have met a total of 26 times on the football field. The Senators have a 9-17-0 record against the Golden Eagles. They last met in 2013 with Athens winning by a score of 42-0.

Sparkman returns 7A All-State Junior athlete Hunter Gibson. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

College prospects include: Jonathan Pointer (5-11, 220) outside linebacker,
