2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Athens finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Athens finished seventh in Class 6A region eight with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 315 points last season. The Golden Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Athens has gone a combined 26-40. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 6A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Athens has managed to compile a record of 181-114. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 6A and 80th in the AHSAA. Allen Creasy stepped down in December with plans to retire after twenty years at Athens. He was the head football coach for the past 16 seasons at the school with a 100-88 record. His best team was the 2006 squad that won the 5A championship with a 10-7 victory over Eufaula. That team finished with a 12-3 record. Athens qualified for the playoffs eleven times during his tenure with the school winning 18 playoff games. Cody Gross returns to Athens but this time as the head football coach. He served as the offensive coordinator at the school from 2003-2006. Gross was the head coach at Colbert County from 2007-2009 with a record of 26-13 in three seasons. He also was at Wilson for one season in 2011. He played quarterback at North Alabama (1993-95) and is a member of the Division II Hall of Fame. He served as an assistant at UNA (1998-2000) and Delta State (2001-2002) before arriving in Athens the first time. Coach Gross' overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 27-22 (55.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gross' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship. The Athens Golden Eagles will play in Class 6A region eight during the 2016 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Golden Eagles if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season. After just 2 wins last year, Athens will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Quarterback John Bachus returns for his junior season after completing 147 of 276 passes for 2,043 yards and 19 touchdowns as a sophomore last season. Running back Jalend Davis also returns for his senior season after rushing for 566 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2015. The Golden Eagles open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Sparkman on Friday, August 26 at Golden Eagle Stadium. Last year the Sparkman Senators finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in seventh place in Class 7A region four. The Senators ended last season on a positive note with a win over Brewer by a score of 43-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Athens and Sparkman have met a total of 26 times on the football field. The Golden Eagles have a 17-9-0 record against the Senators. They last met in 2013 with Athens winning by a score of 42-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In 1925 Langdale tied a record by defeating Milltown 125-0. Hamilton had set the record by thrashing Fayette 125-0 in 1915.
