 2016 Preview

Homewood completed the 2015 season with a 9-3 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region five, the Patriots earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Homewood reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Clay-Chalkville by a score of 40-39.

Since 2010, Homewood has gone a combined 47-20. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 6A over the past six seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Homewood has gone a combined 225-82. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 6A and 16th in the AHSAA. The Patriots have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2008.

The Patriots are led by head coach Ben Berguson who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 18-6 over the past two seasons at Homewood. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Berguson.

Coach Berguson's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 24-12 (66.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Berguson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship.

The Homewood Patriots will play in Class 6A region five during the 2016 season.

The Patriots should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Running back Derrick Underwood returns for his senior season after rushing for 1,195 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior last season.

The Patriots open the 2016 season on a neutral field against non-region opponent Pelham on Thursday, August 18 at Samford. Last year the Pelham Panthers finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 6A region five. The Panthers closed out the regular season with a loss to Gardendale by a score of 61-12.

Homewood and Pelham have met a total of 24 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 17-7-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2015 with Homewood winning by a score of 54-20.
