 2016 Preview 


       Austin completed the 2015 season with a 10-4 record. With their 4-2 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region eight, the Black Bears earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Austin made a nice playoff run in 2015, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Clay-Chalkville team by the score of 45-35.

       The Black Bears won as many games as in any season since 1993. The 470 points scored by the Black Bears last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2012 season that the Black Bears qualified for the playoffs. The Black Bears hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Perkins saw improvement as they won ten games following a 2-8 record in 2014.

       Since 2010, Austin has gone a combined 35-31. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 6A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Austin has managed to compile a record of 130-139. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 6A and 211st in the AHSAA.

       The Black Bears are led by head coach Jeremy Perkins who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 35-31 over the past six seasons at Austin. Under his direction the Black Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Perkins.

       Coach Perkins' overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 35-31 (53.0%).

       The Austin Black Bears will play in Class 6A region eight during the 2016 season.

       The Black Bears enter the 2016 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak.

       The Black Bears should be in contention for a playoff spot in region eight this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

       The Black Bears open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Walker on Friday, August 19 at Ki-Ro/Gambrell Field. Last year the Walker Vikings finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in first place in Class 6A region five. The Vikings lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Gardendale by a score of 48-28.

       Austin and Walker have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Black Bears have a 4-3-0 record against the Vikings. They last met in 1974 with Walker winning by a score of 13-0.

       Austin returns 6A All-State Junior running back Asa Martin. He was named to the second team last season.

Hazlewood won five consecutive state championships from 1988-1992. During this span the Golden Bears won 29 playoff games in a row.
