Southeastern completed the 2025 season with a 10-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region six, the Mustangs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2025. Southeastern lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Pisgah team by a score of 26-15. No team at Southeastern ever won more games in a season than the ten victories last year. Southeastern is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only fourteen seasons. They have managed a record of 67-83 over the past fourteen years. Over the past 14 seasons, Southeastern has managed to compile a record of 67-83. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 2A and 247th in the AHSAA. Coaching Change: Kevin Byrd resigned as the head football coach at Southeastern in early June. His time leading the football program was one of building a program. He inherited a team who had won just eight games the first six years the school fielded a football team. Seven of his eight teams reached the playoffs winning region titles in 2022 and 2024. 2026 Head Coach: Matt Lipscomb served most recently as the defensive coordinator at Southeastern and will take over the reins in 2026 as the next head coach at the school. Season Outlook: The Southeastern Mustangs will play in Class 2A region five during the 2026 season. The Mustangs enter the 2026 season riding a 7 game regular season winning streak. What a great job Coach Byrd has done at Southeastern! These Mustangs are for real and appear to be on the verge of something special the next few seasons. Seven consecutive playoff appearances are great but they have won seven playoff games the past five seasons and that is something to be proud of for a football program still only fourteen years old. A few new faces in this region could make it interesting but make no mistake about it the Mustangs should be in the thick of a region championship race all season. A week three game against Gordo could very well determine the region championship eary in the season. The Mustangs are considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Mustangs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2018 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.
Players to Watch in 2026: Offense: (6) Defense: (3) The Coach had this to say: We look to continue our streak of playoff appearances, while playing a physical brand of football. Season Opener: The Mustangs open the 2026 season on the road against non-region opponent North Sand Mountain on Friday, August 21 at Lloyds Dobbins Field. Last year the North Sand Mountain Bison finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 2A region seven. The Bison lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Lexington by a score of 52-23. Southeastern and North Sand Mountain have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 0-2-0 record against the Bison. They last met in 2020 with North Sand Mountain winning by a score of 19-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
